VFFS Packaging Process & Operating Principles

1. Film Unwinding & Alignment

The roll stock film is fed through tensioning rollers and automatic tracking systems to ensure smooth, precise alignment before bag formation begins.

2. Tube Formation

The flat film moves over a custom-engineered forming collar, which smoothly shapes the material into a continuous vertical cylinder around the filling tube.

3. Vertical Sealing

A specialized heating bar seals the overlapping edges of the film cylinder vertically, creating a perfectly airtight longitudinal seam with minimal heat exposure.

4. Precision Dosing & Product Filling

Synchronized with an upstream multihead weigher, auger, or liquid pump, the system drops the exact volume of product down through the center of the forming tube into the pouch.

5. Horizontal Sealing & Cutting

Heavy-duty horizontal jaws close to seal the top of the filled bag and the bottom of the next pouch simultaneously. An integrated blade cuts cleanly between them to separate the unit.

6. Finished Pouch Discharge

The completed, securely sealed package is gently discharged onto an outfeed conveyor, ready for checkweighing, metal detection, and secondary case packing.

Key Criteria for Choosing the Right VFFS Configuration

Material Properties: Match your product form (free-flowing granules, sticky liquids, fine dust powders) to the correct dosing filler (auger, piston, or multihead scale) for accurate weight control.

Target Output Speed: Define your required bags-per-minute target. Intermittent-motion models suit standard speeds, while continuous-motion VFFS systems are built for ultra-high-volume lines.

Bag Dimensions & Styles: Measure your maximum bag width and length. Ensure the machine’s forming collar dimensions support your required pillow, quad-seal, or flat-bottom stand-up pouch styles.

Packaging Film Materials: Confirm compatibility with your specific roll stock, whether you utilize polyethylene (PE), single-layer polypropylene, or complex heat-sealable laminated barrier films

Upstream & Downstream Integration: Ensure the VFFS controller can communicate with your existing feeding elevators, checkweighers, metal detectors, and automatic case packers.

Maximize Output & Protect Equipment Lifespan

Item Action
Daily Cleaning Routines Thoroughly purge product remnants, fine dust, and packaging debris from all raw material contact zones and seal mechanisms.
Weekly Hardware Inspections Examine sealing jaw profiles, film cutting knives, guide rollers, and belt wear levels to resolve minor degradation early.
Systematic Lubrication Schedules Apply clean, food-grade lubricants to all critical bearing paths and driving pneumatic linkages as specified by GDHP engineering guidelines.
Monthly Temperature & Sensor Calibration Verify thermocouple feedback and calibrate thermal bars precisely to maintain airtight structural seals and zero film scrap.

Operational Troubleshooting Guide

Weak or Defective Bag Sealing

  • Verify sealing jaw temperature settings match the thermal requirements of your specific film material.
  • Inspect the sealing jaws for material buildup, carbon residueized crusting, or structural degradation.
  • Check for product contamination or fine dust caught directly within the seal zone area.
  • Ensure the mechanical sealing pressure is balanced evenly across the entire surface of the jaws.

Film Off-Tracking and Wrinkling

  • Verify that the roll film is centered accurately on the unwind shaft.
  • Clean any accumulated dust, adhesive, or residue off the forming collar and guide rollers.
  • Test the automated edge-guide sensors to confirm the dynamic tracking correction is responsive.
  • Adjust the film tension system to eliminate loose edges or uneven pulling forces.

Inconsistent Product Fill Weights

  • Re-calibrate the multi-head scale, auger filler, or liquid piston pump dosing parameters.
  • Check for material bridging, product blockages, or moisture stickiness inside the feeding chute.
  • Confirm the raw product volume inside the top hopper stays uniform to prevent density changes.
  • Verify that filler discharge timing aligns precisely with the forming machine cycle.

Film Jamming or Feeding Failures

  • Stop operation immediately and safely remove any trapped material from the forming tube assembly.
  • Inspect the friction surfaces of the film pull belts for physical wear or loss of grip.
  • Ensure the cutting blade extends fully and cleanly severs the bags without catching.
  • Confirm that the vacuum pull belt system or mechanical drive motor has proper torque settings.

FAQ

For standard GDHP models, replacing the forming tube assembly to change bag width and recalibrating the dosing system takes between 10 to 20 minutes. This changeover time can be minimized further by utilizing the pre-saved recipe parameters on the PLC touch screen system.

Our standard base units natively produce pillow bags and three-side seals. Advanced pouch styles, including gusseted bags, stand-up bags, and flat-bottom pouches, can be accommodated seamlessly depending on the specific machine model and selected optional module configurations.

GDHP provides full on-site installation, operational calibration, and systematic hands-on training for your production operators. We complement this onboarding with continuous remote technical support to ensure your personnel run the packaging line with total confidence.

GDHP machinery is engineered for extreme durability, focusing primarily on routine cleaning and fast component checks. A complete wear-and-tear spare parts list—including heating elements, blades, and sealing bands—along with their exact replacement life cycles is provided upon delivery.

Yes. All of our vertical packaging systems feature flexible open interfaces. We design specialized synchronization layouts tailored to your existing dosing systems upstream, as well as downstream checkweighers, case packers, or cartoning systems.
